I wrote it when I was first getting into looping and studying ethnomusicology(music across cultures). I'm proud that the drum beat and drones are based heavily on my interest in classical Indian instrumentation and the original loop arrangement. The lyrics are about being over-dependent on technology and amenities that we sometimes feel are crucial to living our best lives. Like, we're doing the absolute most just to live in a space where we can't even get a breathe of real air because we've built ourselves these luxurious boxes with central AC and running water that we never have to leave because the internet and Uber Eats. In a sense, we're trapped. Suffocating in our schedules with these smartphone-fins and endorphin-based actions and apps. I'll be the first to contend that these are opportunities that keep us safe, healthy, and provide connection and communication that, personally, often aids my operations as an independent musician. However, there's another side to this coin. How often does our screen-time get in the way of our productivity, or our self-care, or showing up to be a part of our communities, or having meaningful interactions with our parents, grandparents, and kids? Being underwater is a metaphor for our entrapment. This isn't our natural habitat, and I think the real trick is finding a balance of coming up for air so that we don't drown. That's alot to go over at live performances, though, so I usually just say it's based on the Kevin Costner classic, Waterworld ;)

ENJOY, LOVIES!

Lyrics

In the dark of the deep I'm sinking slow, I'm sinking slowly

Fins cover feet, this is our home and the fluid is flowing

Tread through the bars, all the pressure of the depth

Doesn't matter what the charge, gotta get what we can get.

Through the bars, the pressure, the depth

Doesn't matter the charge just gotta get what we can get

No No one can breathe under the water no

No No one can breathe under the water no

Movement is slow, here in our aquatic abode, it is cold and it's only getting colder.

Fit the mold, all for a show it is old and we're only getting older

Make due relying on our adaptation

Wet suit and O2 importation

We need a break, gotta get back to the bank

Flip outta the fins, I wanna shed this tank

No No one can breathe under the water no

No No one can breathe under the water no

Come up, come up....

We could protect the plunder, keep building our Rome.

We could incubate under all the freedom and foam.

Or through the current and crashes, til we breathe on our own,

Like a phoenix from ashes, we will weave a way home.

No No one can breathe under the water no

No No one can breathe under the water no
