This song is written in what I would call belligerent frustration. I wrote it just after I graduated High School and moved into a dorm at South Plains College. As a teenager, I had a hard time following rules that didn't make sense to me. Over the years, it bred a little contempt for authority. I have 3 sisters, and I remember being called 'the rebellious one.' While I puffed my chest out and owned it, there was an underlying feeling of dejection and toxicity that came with being separate. That was definitely a large part of the angst that Let Me Stay drips with. I was studying guitar when I wrote this one, so it's pretty rock heavy.
In other news, somewhere along the way my label became 'the creative one', so alls well that ends well:)
Lyrics
Let Me Stay
Em C G
I take everything to extremes
Em C G D
Who's to say you won't be another waste of dream?
Em C G
I've spent years jumping fences and breaking down walls
C G D
Taking a torch to everything that came between me and what I think I want.
Am D
Should've never lost control
A m D
Should've never lost control
Em C G D
Lay me down or take me out, help me smile or make me shout
Em C/Am G D
I'm that drink that's a little too stout,
Em C G D
My pride is forged and my cover is blown, I'm waiting for someone to tell me no
Em C/Am G
Feet on fire and a heart still cold
Em C G
Let me stay or let me go.
Em C G
Let me stay or let me go.
Em C G
Line my trophies on the shelf
C G B
To tell me that who I am is better than myself
Em C G
It's been too long living after midnight
C G D
I won't miss the drawn out strain or the episodic delight
A D
Should've never lost control
A D
Should've never lost control
A B C D
But he left, and made me forget how good I was at being alone so
A B C D
He left, and made me forget how good I was at being alone so
Lay me down or take me out, help me smile or make me shout
I'm that drink that's a little too stout,
Pride is forged and my cover is blown, I'm waiting for someone to tell me no
Feet on fire and a heart still cold
Let me stay or let me go.
Let me stay or let me go.
Let me stay or let me go.
